Dr Carwyn Morris

Dr Carwyn Morris is University Lecturer of Digital China at Leiden University, Netherlands. Carwyn’s research explores the role that digital technologies and media play in urban life, how places become internet famous (wanghong), the emergence of digital territory, and the role that Chinese capital plays in European cities. Carwyn engages with a wide variety of actors in his research, including chefs, activists, influencers, fashion designers, shop owners, new entrepreneurs, and various members of the Chinese diaspora. Carwyn's scholarship theorises from China’s urban and digital experiences in order to better understand urban and digital change around the world. Before entering academia Carwyn worked as a brand strategist and cultural consultant in Shanghai.

Carwyn is the Principal Investigator of the European Research Council funded project, CHINA.EU. This project examines the role that Chinese capital plays in European cities, with a focus on the cultural industries as drivers of urban change. By examining Paris, Düsseldorf, and Athens, the project explores not just how Chinese capital is involved in urban change but also how these cities and their cultures are reconstituted on Chinese social media, such as Xiaohongshu.
